Debunking The Myth Of Athlete's Foot

When one hears the words 'athlete's foot' one automatically associates this infection with athletes, but the reality is that this food infection can be contracted by anyone, not just athletes. Nevertheless, we will address it's cause, treatment and a few simple things we can do regularly to protect our feet and prevent athlete's foot and protect.

The micro-organism behind the problem of athlete's foot is a fungus called Trichophyton. Although some people refer to it as ringworm of the foot, the scientific name for athlete's foot is tinea pedia. It is mildly contagious which is why the main reason people get this fungal infection is often due to walking barefoot in most environments like swimming pool showers or locker rooms.

The classic symptoms of tinea pedis include a itchy rash, scaly, peeling and flaking skin. Usually these symptoms occur between the toes and the soles of the feet are often red and dry. If not treated as soon as possible, this can become very uncomfortable. There are powders and creams on the market available at your local drugstore for getting rid of this problem. Lamisil is a common cream that is used for treating foot fungus. These medications often contain an active ingredient called miconazole. For those of you who prefer natural remedies, you can try soaking your feet in four parts water to one part white vinegar.

If these remedies fail to eradicate the fungus, your doctor can prescribe an oral medication to kill the fungus. However, these oral medications are rarely prescribed because they can be taxing on the liver and kidney but if prescribed, your doctor will most likely monitor these organs. Likewise, it may not be prescribed if you have issues with these internal organs or are taking certain other medications. However, the above mentioned strategies are quite effective and safe means of getting rid of athlete's foot.

Athlete's food can be avoided because there are things you can do to prevent it. When at a public shower such as a gym or pool, always wear sandals, flip flops or water shoes. Wear socks that are made from absorbent material and breathable shoes that can circulate air such as leather shoes are a good choice. And as previously mentioned, sandals and flip flops are smart choices because they protect the heels and toes while letting air to get to the feet. There is no need to panic if you get athlete's foot because it is a preventable and treatable condition with different ways to treat the condition.
